FULL DAY: Pickering, Whitby & the North York Moors Railway
A scenic delight today as we head off to the market town of Pickering, on the edge of the North York Moors National Park and featuring a lovely high street and superb castle. It is also where we join the world-famous North York Moors Railway for a splendid journey, of over twenty four miles, through the heart of the national park with magnificent Yorkshire countryside on both sides of the carriage. Arriving in Whitby there is plenty of time to explore this picturesque fishing town and resort, set beneath a ruined abbey and famous for the ‘best’ fish and chips in Britain.
FULL DAY: Castle Howard
This morning we skirt the Yorkshire Wolds on our way to Castle Howard, set within the Howardian Hills area of outstanding national beauty. Castle Howard, privately owned for 300 years by the Howard family, is one of England’s finest historic houses, nestled within a thousand acres of parkland dotted with statues, temples, lakes, fountains and formal gardens. Over the past 70 years it has also been the location of choice for many TV and film costume dramas such as Brideshead Revisited, Bridgerton and Victoria to name but a few.
HALF DAY: Bridlington
This morning we head along the coast to Bridlington an ancient fishing port and seaside resort. Today the old town, promenade and beaches are a delight to explore with the busy harbour being famous for its shellfish, especially its lobster catch of over 300 tonnes per year, making it the ‘Lobster Capital of Europe’.
