Self-drive Morecambe - Headway Hotel

Headway Hotel

4 & 7 Nights Half Board

Ideally located on Morecambe’s level East Promenade, the Headway Hotel offers lovely views across the bay.

Morecambe is a coastal town on Morecambe Bay in Lancashire. In 1846, the Morecambe Harbour and Railway Company was formed to build a harbour on Morecambe Bay, close to the fishing village of Poulton-le-Sands and a connecting railway. By 1850, the railway linked to Skipton, Keighley and Bradford in the West Riding of Yorkshire, and a settlement began to grow around the harbour and railway to service the port and as a seaside resort.

Morecambe was a thriving seaside resort in the mid-20th century. While the resort of Blackpool attracted holiday-makers predominantly from the Lancashire mill towns, Morecambe had more visitors from Yorkshire (due to its railway connection) and Scotland.

Morecambe's main central shopping area stretches from Central Drive Retail Park to the Arndale Shopping Centre. This area also incorporates two markets—the Festival Market and the Morecambe Sunday Market—and the Reel Cinema complex. Morecambe is primarily a seaside resort with a large proportion of the local economy based on tourism, hospitality and catering located along the seafront. It is also situated at the foot of the Lake District National Park.

During the summer, the park is brought to life with brass band concerts, family fun activities and events. Happy Mount Park is a traditional park by reputation, where all ages can sit and relax, take a stroll in attractive well-tended parkland, or for the more adventurous, enjoy the play areas, miniature railway, bowling green, putting green, crazy golf, café and picnic areas along with many more activities.

Tern Project – The Tern Project celebrates the birds and other diverse wildlife of Morecambe Bay, a stunning series of various award-winning sculptures situated along Morecambe’s seafront and promenade. Steel cormorants, gannets and razorbills sit on the roundabouts of Central Drive, a huge compass hides behind the Midland Hotel on the Stone Jetty with various puzzles and a strange mythical bird. The trail extends towards the Festival Maket with a path made up of poems, jokes and quotes by famous authors, musicians, entertainers and artists. The highlight of the trail is the statue of Eric Morecambe, designed by Graham Ibbeson and opened by the Queen in 1999.

Lancaster Castle - Lancaster Castle is a medieval castle in Lancaster in the English county of Lancashire. Its early history is unclear, but may have been founded in the 11th century on the site of a Roman fort overlooking a crossing of the River Lune. In 1164, the Honour of Lancaster, including the castle, came under royal control.
