DAY 1: From selected local departure points we cross the Channel to Calais and continue through Belgium and on to Cologne, for a late dinner on board.
DAY 2: Cruising overnight we reach Koblenz at the gateway to the Rhine tourist area. This afternoon sit back and enjoy the stunning scenery as we cruise through the spectacular Rhine Gorge and reach Rüdesheim, the popular tourist centre, renowned for its narrow alleys and famous wine taverns.
DAY 3: An overnight and morning cruise to Aschaffenburg where our coach excursion includes the old town and an opportunity to visit Schloss Johannisberg, the majestic 17th century palace overlooking the River Main. Then cruise onward to delightful Miltenburg by mid-evening.
DAY 4: A full day cruising on the River Main, with a short call at Wertheim, nicknamed ‘little Heidelberg’, to reach the historic city of Wurzburg at about midnight.
DAY 5: A morning coach excursion to Festung Marienberg viewpoint, offering fabulous views across the city of Wurzburg, before re-joining the ship at Ochsenfurt. Continuing upstream through the peaceful countryside of Franconia, to arrive at Schweinfurt.
DAY 6: Cruise to Bamberg, the ‘Treasure chest of Franconia’, to join the Main-Danube canal, 106 miles in length and connecting the two rivers to complete the ability to navigate across Europe by water. We reach Nuremberg by late evening.
DAY 7: Our coach excursion gives us the opportunity to visit Nuremberg, known for its wartime associations, hilltop Kaiserburg and the restored Lorenzkirche. We re-board at Hilpoltstein to climb through rural Bavaria on the beautifully engineered canal, to reach a summit height of 1,332ft. above sea level, through massive locks with a lifting height of up to 78ft. We continue into the scenic Altmuhl Valley to reach picturesque Riedenburg by mid-evening.
DAY 8: Today we leave the canal and join the mighty Danube at Kelheim, cruising downstream to historic Regensburg, an old Roman city, for the evening.
DAY 9: Today we cruise through pastoral landscapes on the Danube to reach the gorgeous small city of Passau on the Austrian border by mid afternoon for our final night on board.
DAY 10: This morning we disembark at Passau for our coach journey back through Germany to the Cologne area for our final overnight stay and dinner.
DAY 11: To Calais for the Channel crossing, before returning home to our original joining points.
The Esmeralda is a spacious, superior, river cruise ship with 63 outward facing cabins on two decks with a homely, friendly atmosphere. The vessel has air-conditioning throughout.

Please note: Prices reflect cabin location. Promenade Deck cabins are higher above the waterline and have better views. There is a stair lift between Main and Promenade Deck and Promenade Deck and Sun Deck. Whilst there is a stair lift on board wheelchair access to and from ship is not possible.
