About the Passion Play:
It first started in 1634, when the citizens of Oberammergau took a vow after being spared further suffering in a disastrous plague, when many people died. It is a play of the ‘suffering, death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ’. More than 2,000 actors, singers, instrumentalists and stage technicians are involved in performing the play, and at times up to 200 players are on stage. Performed in the custom built Passionspielhaus, a custom built theatre, the roofed auditorium holds 4,700 people, designed for everyone to enjoy a good view of the open air stage. The play is staged in afternoon and evening performances, parts 1 and 2, with each 2.5 hours long – a total of five hours with a three-hour interval during which dinner is served.
The picturesque small town of Oberammergau is situated in the foothills of the Alps, in Southern Bavaria, 12 miles north of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. It is located in a wide valley, surrounded by forests, mountains, sunny slopes and green meadows. There is a woodcarving school, and the town is renowned for many painted cottages, inns and houses, with frescos named after fairytale characters, including a modern Hansel and Gretel house. A cable railway and chairlift give access to the local summits.
